Lift cages, locking and unlocking.- In means for automatically locking the handing ropes of lifts when the well doors are open of the kind in which a pivoted gripping cam is actuated bv an electric solenoid connected to the several contact breakers in the well of the lift, the cam D<1> is mounted between a pair of rocking arms D and is moved towards the handing rope B by a spring e. The core of the solenoid G is connected to the bracket D<3> to which the arms D are pivoted at e'. The cam is held in central position by the engagement of an arm E' mounted on the bracket D<3> with a projection d<1> on the cam.
