Abstract

12,929. Quester, E. Sept. 9. Rotary containers; air, controlling circulation of.-Tobacco &c. is sifted and dried or cooled, after cutting, in a rotary sifting-drum into which a current of a i r , either warm or cold, is forced through perforations in a radial or circumferential direction to permeate the tobacco without interfering with its progress through the drum. The rotary sifting-drum 1 has at one end an air-supply pipe 8 commumcating by means of a box 11, having a conical baffle, with a number of pipes 13, which extend along the drum, and through perforations in which the air escapes into the drum. Some of the pipes may carry projecting teeth. The tobacco is fed in at 5, and the dust and sand are gathered in the hoppers 16, 17 and the treated tobacco in the hopper 6. Modifications are described according to which the air is supplied by a central perforated pipe, by segmental boxes extending along the outside of the drum, and by an annular box enclosing a part of the length of the drum.
