Abstract
12,730. Hepburn, G. G. Sept. 6. Hypochlorites, obtaining; cells; electrodes; electrolytes, circulating.-Bipolar electrodes A are recessed at their upper ends, or provided with vertical extensions, to form troughs E from which the electrolyte, such as an alkalichloride solution, flows through the narrow spaces between the electrodes and out between their lower edges. This outflow may be controlled by movable non-conducting bars or wedges P, which may be notched at intervals or slotted longitudinally. Strips inserted in horizontal grooves in the vertical faces of the electrodes may be used alternatively. The lower edges of the electrodes may be bevelled, anrl grooved at H to prevent mingling of the streams from adjacent cells. Vertical edges of the cells are formed by non-conducting strips L let into the electrodes. Such strips may be of paraffin wax, cast in place. By circulating hot water through the electrolyzer, the wax or the like can be softened so as to allow the distance between the electrodes to be adjusted. Overflow from the troughs E is provided for by arranging the top edges of the side strips L below the top surfaces of the electrodes, and by cutting away the vertical edges of the electrodes to form channels for the overflow. The electrodes rest directly or by means of insulated or non-conducting arms B on bolts C covered with insulation. Between the arms B or other parts resting on the bolts are arranged compressible distance-pieces. The electrolyte flowing from the cells is pumped back into the troughs or a tank feeding them. According to the Provisional Specification, (1) the bottoms of the troughs may be wholly or partly closed by pieces which may be simultaneously raised or lowered, (2) the side edges of the cells may be closed by strips entering grooves in the electrodes to varying depths dependent on the proximity of the electrodes, or the strips may be pressed against the edges of the electrodes or replaced by cement, or by glass or other sheets each covering the edges of several electrodes, and (3) liquid friction may be increased by shaping the electrode faces so that a sinuous path is formed.
