4563. Muntz, W. E. March 23. Actuating.-In devices such as valves for closing a coned orifice with a coned plug, the mechanism actuating the plug is so arranged that the plug is free to engage the coned seat hermetically. In the device shown in Fig. 2, a coned valve member e is formed with a screwed tail m loosely fitting in a nut n. The nut n is formed with three arms o which are secured in the casing by a screwed ring q. The valve spindle j is formed with a cross-bar s loosely fitting in a crutch r on the actuating- spindle f. This spindle is formed with a coned packing-collar p held against a corresponding surface on the casing by a nut u and spring washer. In a modification, the valve member is formed integrally with a screwed spindle loosely fitting in a nut. The spindle is furnished with suitable packing-devices, such as a stuffing-box, cup-leather, packed piston, &c. In a further modification, Fig. 5, the actuating-screw is made with a thread of gradually decreasing depth, so that as the member z is screwed away from its seating z<1>, apertures l are uncovered in the female thread. The outer diameter of the thread may remain constant, while the central part may be tapered. The seating z' may be arranged on the outside of the container, in which case it is surrounded by a cup provided with a suitable spout. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 15,876/14.
