Abstract
2717. Miller, J. L., and Shaffer, I. C. Feb. 19. Mechanically operated from or by vehicle.- Points are set and reset by means of adjustable rods on a train acting on bell-crank levers which transmit their motion through mechanism connected by cords or chains to the point-moving device. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the train-operated device situated some distance before and after the points. An horizontal shaft 60 carrying a bevel-wheel 59 is provided with a bell-crank lever 64 on its outer end to be thrown over by the passing train. The wheel 59 engages with a broken gear-wheel 58 on the vertical shaft 54, and is held up by supporting- rollers 62. The shaft 54 is provided with a disk 55 having two oppositely-disposed pins 56, to which the connecting-cords &c. are attached. One such apparatus is placed before and one beyond the points to be operated, the connecting-cords to one being parallel and to the other crossed. The point-operating device shown in plan in Fig. 11 has the cords 46 from one side and 48 from the other connected to a disk 36 on a vertical shaft 33, the lower end of which is provided with a lever 32 connected by a link to the points. The disk 36 is also provided with spring-pressed rollers 39 which engage in one or other of two radial recesses in an under plate, the recesses corresponding in position to the setting of the points. The operating- apparatus on the train consists of a rod 67, Fig. 21, which slides in a slotted tube 68 and can be projected on either side of the vehicle so as to strike the lever 64, Fig. 2, the ends of the rod 67 being provided with rollers 69. The rod 67 is operated by cords 73 attached to one or more lugs 71, which project through a slot 72 in tube 68. The cord is moved either by wheel action or throw-over lever arranged both on the engine and preferably on the rear vehicle so that the points can be prepared from the engine and reset from the last vehicle.
