Abstract

21,120. Candy, F. P. Oct. 17. Combinations of interdependent valves.-Relates to filtering-plant comprising a number of separate filtering-elements which are cleaned by a reverse flow of water, and consists in providing non-return valves upon the pipes serving for the exit of the filtrate, the valves being so arranged that each of them may be opened in succession for the supply of wash-water to one filtering- element only at a time. In one form of apparatus. shown in plan Fig. 4, the separate filtering-elements are provided with separate pipes 5 ... 12 leading to a valve box 13 provided with a rotary member 18 having ports 20, 22, of which all except the port 22 are fitted with non-return valves 21. The rotary member may consist of a plate provided with non-return valves in the form of balls, either lighter or heavier than water, according as the plate is at the top or bottom of the valve box. In another form of apparatus, Fig. 7, all the pipes 5 ... 12 are fitted at the point where they enter the valve box with non- return valves 21, which are opened in succession by a striker 30 rotating with a shaft 23. The requisite intermittent rotation of the rotary member may be effected by the mechanism shown in Fig. 8, wherein the valve-box shaft 23 receives motion from a pawl and ratchet 30, 31. The pawl 31 is fitted to a lever 32 provided at one end with a weight 33, and at the other with a roller 34 engaging a constantly rotating cam 35. Upon release of the roller 34 by the cam, the weight 33 falls, and the pawl engages the ratchet and imparts motion to the shaft 23.
