Abstract

Piston packing substitutes; cylinders.-In vacuum brakes for railway &c. vehicles, means are provided for ensuring that the rolling packing ring becomes seated in the groove around the brake piston in the brake-off position, and for facilitating the removal of the lower end of the brake cylinder. In the form shown in Fig. 2, the lower end a of the cylinder is formed with a rim-like extension b which bears against the packing-ring e in the brake-off position. The upper end of the rim b may be bevelled so as to compress the ring e and ensure a good joint. Fig. 3 shows a form in which the cylinder is divided into two parts, the lower part being formed with a projecting ledge f which bears against the ring e. The cylinder wall may be tapered or slightly reduced in diameter above the ledge f, to compress the ring e. To facilitate dismantling of the lower end of the cylinder, the upper part is provided with brackets p adapted to be passed through gaps o in the flange of the lower part a, the upper part being then slightly rotated and secured by bolts q. According to the Provisional Specification, the brackets on the upper part engage lugs on the lower part.
