Producers.-In gas-producers, more particularly of the kind employed for the destructive distillation of sewage sludge &c., the shaft A is divided into vertical compartments A<1> by one or more radial partitions B<1>. The ash-pit E is provided with an inclined grating E<2> below which is supplied air that has been previously heated within passages B<2> in the radial partitions B'. Dampers K are provided at the tops of the compartments A in order that any chamber may be isolated.
