Abstract

5210. Hedley, F., and Doyle, J. S. March 1, 1912, [Convention date]. Tramcars; sides, floors, &c.-A street car has the floor arranged at a low level in order that access may be obtained without the use of steps. According to the c o n - struction of which Figs. 2 and 4 are sectional views, the low-level floor extends over the lower axle 14 of the trucks and the wheels are accommodated beneath the seats 17,18,19 arranged around the sides and against end partitions which cut off the motorman's compartment. The floor 35 of this compartment is at the level of the seats 17, 18. Access to the car may be by central side doors 13, or, with an open convertible car, at any point along the sides. Seats 39 are hinged to turn up between the barriers 38, 40, in front of the door not in use. The underframiog comprises side sills 11 bent upwardly over the trucks and around the ends of the car, and a body bolster 20 which is downwardly bent to form the lower middle portion and from which bars 26, carrying one of the centre bearing-plates 30, extend to the end of the underframe. The truck bolster 22, carried on springs 24 by links 25, passes through the side frame 16 of the truck, and is upwardly bent at its ends to take the side bearings 28. The arrangement of a truck of the sidebearing type is also shown in the Specification. In this case, the truck bolster is dispensed with, and the side-bearing members are mounted on springs arranged on brackets secured to the side frames 16.
