Abstract

5082. Marks, E. C. R., [Submarine Wireless Co.]. Feb. 28. Subaqueous sound signals. - For producing subaqueous acoustic signals, a stretched strip is arranged to be set in vibration by an exciting device which can be started and stopped at will. A longitudinally vibrating strip 14 is stretched between plates in the walls of a vessel, rods 16, 17 serving to brace the plates against independent vibrations. A wheel 18 is kept constantly pressed against the strip, and when desired is set in motion by clutching the shaft 35 which drives it through a worm and wheel gearing 36, 37 on to the shaft of a constantlyrunning motor. The wheel 18 consists of two plates 22, 24, the lower one having an annular flange 23, held together by screws and holding between them an annulus of felt 21 which, when moving, rubs the strip 14 and when stopped damps its vibrations, and which is kept moist by alcohol contained in the chamber between the plates and percolating through apertures 23<a> in the flange 23. The pressure of the wheel on the strip can be adjusted by a screw 31. For starting and stopping the wheel, the clutch shown in Fig. 5 is used. It comprises rotary and stationary clutch-members 42, 43 which can be magnetized by coils 47, 50, the soft-iron disk 41 feathered to the shaft 35 being attracted to and gripping whichever clutch-member is magnetized. A tapping-key is arranged to close the circuit of the coil 47 when depressed, and of the coil 50 in its normal position.
