Abstract

4006. Southey, A. W. Feb. 17. Vaporizers, external.-In an apparatus for producing gaseous fuel for internal-combustion engines from liquid fuel, by partial combustion of the liquid fuel in a chamber to which air is admitted, as described in Specification 27,612/11, the liquid fuel is supplied in excess of the amount that is to be gasified by a jet of air or gas under pressure. The spraying-nozzle is placed in a well 4, to which fuel is supplied from a float chamber 1, and comprises a gas or air jet 6 below the level of the fuel and an outer sleeve 7 with openiugs 8 to admit the fuel. The gas under pressure is preferably obtained from the cylinder through a floating valve 10, Fig. 2, which allows the passage of gas to the spraying-nozzle when sufficient pressure is produced in the cylinder and cuts off the supply at a still greater pressure before the charge in the cylinder is fired. The spray passes through a hole 19 in a baffle 17 and enters the chamber 16, to which air is admitted through flap valves 22. The fuel is fired by a sparking-plug 24. and the flame of combustion and the gases pass round a baffle 29 and through an opening 31 to a passage 32, where supplementary air is admitted through a valve 37. Any excess of fuel returns through holes 18 in the baffle 17 to the well 4. Two or more nozzles, which may be inclined so that the spray from one impinges on the spray from another, may be used. The Provisional Specification describes also a modified construction in which the liquid fuel is supplied to a tray around the bottom of which runs a pipe carrying the spraying nozzle or nozzles, the air or gas under pressure being admitted to this pipe.
