Filters with horizontal filtering-layers; air supply; filters, cleansing; supplying liquid.-Filtering-apparatus comprising an horizontally-arranged drum is provided with means for admitting compressed air to assist in breaking up the filter-bed during cleansing. The water to be filtered is supplied to the filter from a main e by a pipe f and centrallyarranged distributing-trough d. The filtered liquid is collected by a strainer system i connected by an outlet pipe k to a discharge main. Wash-water is admitted through the pipe k, air being supplied to the pipe from a main m through a pipe n. The used wash-water passes from the trough d to a waste-water main. A by-pass is provided between the main for impure water and the main for filtered water. Two or more of these filters may be arranged as a battery.
