2277. Kendig, W. J. Jan. 28. Sewing - needles.-Hand or machine sewing - needles are formed by twisting a shcetmetal blank to form a tube having a slot. Fig. 3 shows a sewing - machine needle so formed. The coil 6 is drawn down towards the point 8 to open the slot 10 in the part 9. The blank is cut before coiling to leave eyes 4, an ear 7, and a guard 11. The needle is threaded by placing the thread in the top eye behind the ear 7 and drawing it down so that it slips behind the guard 11 and into the slot.
