Abstract

22,266. Redfern, T. C. Sept. 30. Plastic compositions containing india-rubber &c. and fibres.-In making boot and shoe soles, fibrous materials are mixed with rubber, guttapercha, balata, or the like, in the proportion of about 70 per cent. of fibre to 30 per cent. of rubber. The material is passed between rollers, always in the same longitudinal direction, so that the fibres lie in one direction, thus giving a greater flexibility in a plane across the line of the fibres. The shoe soles are moulded with an initial curvature greater than that to which they will be subjected in use, so that cracking is avoided, and the fibres are arranged transversely to the length of the sole. The material is vulcanized in the mould, preferably under a pressure of 2,000 lb. per sq. in. and at a temperature of 280‹ F.
