Abstract

17,933. Ayers, T. G. I. Aug. 2. Aerial machines without aerostats; shock of landing, deadening; framework.-An aerial machine comprises a pyramidal framework a with one or more lifting-propellers n, rand one or more driving-propellers 18, the two sets of propellers being driven by the same or separate motors. Lowered planes or planes hinged to the framework and adapted to be automatically or manually raised into an horizontal position are provided. The lower ends of the member a are provided with parts 19 sliding in hollow parts 21 under spring control and having india-rubber feet 20 to absorb shock of landing. Propelling.-The propellers are shown driven by a single engine 6, Fig. 4, mounted so as to be vertically adjustable, but two engines may be used. The propellers m, r on the shafts h, p are oppositely driven through the gearing shown. During the ascent, the propeller 18 on the shaft 10 is put out of action by the engagement of a hook with a collar 14 fixed to the shaft 10, which causes the clutches 8, 9 to be put out of gear. Release of the hook enables the spring 11 to place the clutches in gear. Steering; planes, arrangement and construction of.-Upper and lower frames 26 carrying pivoted vanes 28 are fixed to the frame a at opposite sides. A greater area is arranged at one side than at the other of the vane axles in order that they will be closed by air pressure. The vanes may be operated all by a single lever, or separate levers for the two sides of the machine, arranged so as to be connected together for simultaneous operation may be used. The lower sets of planes may be operated separately. The planes may be hinged so as to rise automatically when the machine falls. Racks and pinions or links may be used for operating the vanes. An elevator 34 is provided. Cars.-The car is mounted on the cross-stays f and is provided with windows. The outside of the cabin is given a stream line formation in the upward and forward directions.
