Actuating.-To enable gas taps to be operated from a distance, the actuating-mechanism comprises a drum f adapted. to be partly rotated by a cord &c. g passing round it so as to impart a reciprocating movement to a sliding bar k connected by linkwork to the tap. When the drum is rotated, by pulling the cord, the pawl j upon it engages one of the two teeth on the separately-mounted ratchet-wheel h, thereby rotating the ratchet-wheel and with it the pin i, which engages a slot in the bar k and raises or depresses the bar putting the tap on or off. The movement of the drum is limited by stops l, l<1>, m, and the drum is returned to its initial position by a spring.
