Abstract

3801. Nasmith, J. W. Feb. 15. Combing-machines.-In machines of the Heilmann type, in which the nippers are made to reciprocate uninterruptedly between the combing point and the detaching-rollers, the point of the nipper is guided along a path so designed as to remain at a constant distance from the needles at the combing end and then to lead directly to the detaching-means with the smallest feasible movement. The nipper frame 1, Fig. 3, is reciprocated horizontally by an arm 3 oscillating about a shaft 4. The necessary vertical reciprocating movements to enable the nipper point to move along the path C D, Fig. 6, may be imparted by a bowl 6 on a stud 5 moving over a cam 8, or by an oscillating arm and connecting-rod. If it is desired that the nipper point should move concentrically with the cylinder, the arm 3, Fig. 5, is made of the same radius as the cylinder, and the stud 5 is supported by a link 15 also of the same radius. The upper nipper arm 7, Fig. 3, carries a pin 17 which is engaged by the slotted end of a bar 18, sliding through a fixed bar 21 and provided with a stop collar 23. When the nipper moves to the right, a spring 22 acting against a finger 19 fixed on the rod 18 presses the jaws more firmly together, whilst when the nipper moves to the left, the nipper will open as soon as the collar 23 engages with the bar 21. The spring 22 also serves to keep the rod 18 down on the pin 17, but if the rod is lifted by hand, the whole nipper can be lifted clear of the cylinder as described in Specification 3589/11. Specifications 13,758/01 and 17,495/09 are also referred to.
