2026. Archer, C. F. Jan. 26. Variable-speed ratchet gearing.-The connecting-rods 13 of a three or more cylinder engine oscillate pivoted beams 3 to which are attached rods 9 working cranks on a shaft 10, from which the valves are actuated. A rod 5, attached to a sliding block 4 sliding in a slot in the beam 3, actuates the driving-shaft 7 through a ratchet clutch 6. The blocks 4 are adjusted by means of levers 14<a> and links 14.
