Abstract
20,951. Baily, A. H., and Cleveland, F. J. Sept. 8. Steering and balancing.-An aeroplane is provided at each side with inclined curtains or panels, which can be twisted or skewed independently or simultaneously for balancing and steering. The upper plane a of a biplane extends beyond the lower one a<1>, and the inclined panels b, c are arranged between the extremities of the planes a, a<1>. One edge of the panels, shown as the bottom edge e, is secured at several points by cords d to the plane a', the other edge e<1> being secured only at its middle point to the plane a. The ends of the edge e are connected by cords f to the operating - mechanism. The panels may be variously shaped, and may taper towards the fixed edge to reduce the resistance. The cords f may be actuated by chains p, q, Fig. 16, passed around sprockets on a pair of handwheels n, o, mounted on a pillar r, which may be tilted to actuate the elevator or longitudinal stability members. When applied to a monoplane, the panels are stretched between the tips and the body. The upwardly and outwardly inclined position of the panels b, c tends to preserve the stability of the machine.
