Abstract

17,137. Rainforth, W., and Napier & Son, D. July 19. Force-feed lubricators. - In an arrangement for lubricating the transmission gear of motorvehicles, oil is circulated positively between the axle casing and the casing of the universal joint to lubricate the joint and the shaft bearings. A pump O, mounted in the lower part of the axle casing F, and operated by an eccentric R on the axle S, forces oil from the casing F through a pipe Y to the casing of the universal joint E, from which the oil flows back to the casing F through a casing G enclosing the driving-shaft A. The pump-inlet V is above the bottom of the casing F, so that the oil in that casing is never lower than the level of the inlet. In a modification, a rotary pump, operated by a chain, forces the oil through a longitudinal bore in the shaft A. The oil may be forced directly through the casing G, a separate pipe being provided for its return. The shaft A itself may be utilized for forcing the oil.
