Ammonia; silicon nitrides.-Ammonia is produced by heating silicon-nitrogen compounds, or mixtures of such compounds with metallic nitrides, such as nitrides of aluminium, zirconium, manganese, and chromium, with alkaline substances in solution or suspension, or with alkaline substances and steam. Pressure is preferably employed. The examples include the treatment of any of the products obtained according to Specification 15,641/09 with lime and caustic soda respectively in the presence of water; the treatment with caustic-soda solution of the product obtained by heating ferrosilicon in nitrogen; the treatment with milk of lime and sodium carbonate of the siliconnitrogen compound produced as described in Specification 12,471/95; and the treatment in an iron tube with steam of a mixture of caustic soda and the product obtained by heating infusorial earth and peat in a current of nitrogen. It is preferred to remove any large excess of carbon from the silicon-nitride mixture before treating it with steam. Specifications 4338/79, 21,755/95, and 21,997/95 are also referred to.
