Tufted fabrics. - In pile fabrics such as hearthrugs &c. in which the pile is formed of separate pieces of cloth or felt, each of these tags is doubled over one or more weft threads, and is further held in place by the two adjacent weft threads and also by two warp threads or sets of threads. In weaving the cloth, a few shots, preferably of thick weft, are first put in to form the end of the fabric, and then a row of tags, of the shape shown in Fig. 5, is inserted, and allowed to hang down, the warps a, Fig. 2, taking into the recesses c<2>. Another shot d of weft is put in and beaten up, and then another row of tags is inserted, these tags being opposite to the spaces between the tags in the first row, as indicated in Fig. 2, which shows the back of the fabric. These are held in place by the weft d'. The lower parts of the tags in the first row are then brought up between the warp threads a until the recesses c<2> engage with the threads. Another shot of weft is put in, and the ends of the second row of tags are brought up and similarly secured. Further rows of tags are inserted and secured in the same fashion. In this arrangement, the tags in one row overlap the tags in the next row. When the tags are doubled over a single weft thread, this arrangement is not possible, but tags of the forms shown in Figs. 6, 7, and 8 may be employed.
