Abstract
19,619. Zelger, W. F. Aug. 26. Aerial machines without aerostats; planes, construction and arrangement of; steering.-An annular plane a is supported on a central frame and is provided with steering and balancing surfaces, or more than one of such planes may be used. The plane is curved in radial cross-section so that the inner and outer edges of the annulus are below the intermediate part. The plane is hinged along its longitudinal centre line so that the inclination of the two sides may be adjusted during flight. The stayrods ware hinged to a collar slidable on a central vertical shaft and connected to operating-cords. One or more pairs of lateral balancing-planes l are provided, each pair being mounted on shafts c, d, having at their inner ends bevel-wheels m gearing with a bevel wheel n secured to a shaft o. The shaft o may be provided with a depending weight for automatically controlling the lateral balancing- planes, or the seat for the operator may be mounted on the shaft o so that the latter is operated by the reflex movements of the operator. The seat is slidably mounted on the rod o, and serves to operate also a rear elevator u, which may form part of the annular supporting-surface. A rear rudder r is connected to arms s secured to the shafts c, d so as to be operated with the side balancing-planes. Hand-wheels p are provided to actuate the balancing-planes independently of the seat connexion. A rudder 2 is mounted on a shaft 3 secured to the elevator u, and is operated independently of the elevator by a fork 4 controlled by cords passing around a pulley at the end of a handwheel 8. According to the Provisional Specification, the two semi-circular hinged portions of the annulus may move simultaneously with the side balancing-planes.
