Abstract

15,775. Fairweather, W., [Underwood Typewriter Co.]. July 6. Tabulating - mechanism. -Relates to "column- "skipping" tabulators of the kind wherein the column-stops successively engage a pinion connected to the arresting-devices. The pinion 9 has five teeth, and the pinion shaft 10 is provided with five helically-arranged stops 12 ... 16 situated in the planes of stop-rods 17 ... 21, which may be thrust upwards by key-levers 25. The released carriage brings the column-stops 7 into successive engagement with the teeth of the pinion 9, which is thereby turned until it is engaged by the columnstop corresponding to the depressed key, whereupon the associated stop 12 ... 16 engages its stop-rod and the carriage is arrested. During carriage-return and ordinary operation of the typewriter, the pinion 9 is revolved idly by the column-stops. The pinion 9 is normally held with a tooth vertically over the shaft 10 by means of spring pawls 41, 42 pivoted at 43, 44 and provided with cam-arms 46, 47 adapted to be engaged by the column-stops 7. When the carriage moves to the right, Fig. 3, the pawl 41 is released from the pinion by the engagement of the stops and the cam 46, and the pawl 42 is released by the advancing tooth of the pinion. When the carriage moves to the left, the pawl 42 is released by the stops, and the pawl 41 is released by the pinion. Carriage-releasing arrangements; carriage brakes. -The carriage is released by a universal bar 29, which is engaged by members 28 on the rods 16 &c.. and is connected to a roll 35 which lifts the carriage rack. The universal bar also throws a brake-barrel 38 into gear with the spring drum 4.
