Abstract

1500. Willis, P. R. J., [Roberts, C. C.]. Jan. 21. Coating - machines. - A machine for applying a tin or other coating to sheets of metal or other substance is provided with a dross guard for preventing contact of the sheets with the top layer of the bath, and for confining the coating-material to one side of the sheet. The sheets to be coated pass between feeding-rollers 5, cleaning-brushes 13, the lower pair of which revolve in an acid bath, through coating- material contained between a depressing-roller 36 and the dross guard 28, past an adjustable spring-pressed scraper 47, and a fluted roller 21, and between brushes 51 for removing excess coating-material, and finally between pulling- rollers 53. The bearings of the upper rollers and brushes are adjustable vertically, and those of the upper rollers are mounted resiliently. The dross guard comprises an arc-shaped portion 28, with closed ends and a cock 33 for admitting coating - material from a bath 17. The guard is suspended by rods 24 from weighted levers. The roller 36 is mounted on a shaft 37, and raised or lowered as required by rack-and-pinion mechanism. On this shaft, and revolving with the roller 36, are two collars 38, Fig. 4, one of which is adjustable to accommodate plates of various widths. The collars 38 have circumferential grooves co-operating with ridges 41 in supplemental end pieces 29 arranged in the dross guard. These grooves and ridges grip the edges of the plate and confine the coating- material to its lower side. To coat plates on both sides, the collars 38 and end-pieces 29 are removed.
