Abstract
26,119. Hackbarth, R. Dec. 3. Motor road vehicles.-The sprocket on the driving-axle of a motor road vehicle drives the wheels through the medium of rods sliding in grooves on the axle and having bevelled ends, which rods are automatically thrown out of gear with one wheel to allow overrunning on turning, when travelling either forwards or backwards. In the construction shown in Fig. 1, the rods b are arranged to slide in grooves on the axle a, and are connected together by collars d arranged on either side of the sprocket f; springs are arranged between the boss of the sprocket and the collars. The ends of the rods are bevelled as shown, and normally engage holes in each wheel hub to the same extent. On turning a corner, one wheel tends to travel faster and forces the ends of the rods out of engagement with the one wheel hub, thus permitting overrunning. In Fig. 3, the wheels are fixed to hollow sleeves terminating in flanges l, l<1> at the sprocket. The rods are short and are arranged at the centre of the axle, passing through the sprocket-wheel and through holes in the flanges l, l<1>. Collars d are fixed on the hollow axles and springs are arranged between such collars and sliding rings p. On turning a corner, one of the flanges l, l<1> forces the rods b against one of the rings p, compressing the corresponding spring.
