Abstract
23,641. Hanwell, H. W. Oct. 25. Spring-drum apparatus for adjustable suspension. -A pendant, in which a spring-controlled drum is employed to receive the slack of the flexible wire, is arranged so that the springs are used as conductors between the movable, and stationary parts. A stationary axle C is held in a yoke B fixed to a stem A, and has a rotatable drum hollowed on each side to receive controlling-springs E, E', and also a fixed insulating - collar F and disk F<1>, the disk having a shoulder which projects into the recess occupied by the spring E<1>. The axle is hollowed at one end and receives conductors G, G<1> which are connected through the axle to the inner ends of the springs, the outer ends of which are connected to the supporting conductors H, H'. At the side of the disk F<1> is a loose ratchet and brake wheel K, the teeth engaging with a spring-controlled pawl L pivoted to the drum. When the lamp is lowered, the pawl engages with the ratchet-wheel, and the friction between the brake face and the disk controls the motion of the drum. The axle is slotted at C<1> and receives a cross-pin C<2>, against which bears a setscrew C<3>. In this way the friction between the wheel K and the disk can be adjusted. One'of the springs may be replaced by a coil of wire to serve only as a conductor. Specification No.. 7798, A.D. 1906, is referred to.
