Abstract
22,950. Dunsmore, M. C. Oct. 17. Gas and like engines; valves; ignition, back, preventing.-The inlet and exhaust valves A, Bare concentric and both close upon the removable seating C, The exhaust valve, on opening, seats itself upon the inlet valve before the cylindrical part K has moved sufficiently to open communication to the exhaust port J, thus preventing loss of charge and back ignition. Further movement of the exhaust valve raises the inlet valve. The shoulder K on the exhaust valve deflects the exhaust gases and so protects the angular faces of the valves. The exhaust valve may come gently to its seat after the exhaust passage is closed by the port K, and the inlet valve alone may then be actuated by the usual lever depressing the cotter D, before it has actually come back to its seat. The valves may be closed by volute springs, and the exhaust valve stem may be of steel and secured to the casting B, Fig. II. The body of the exhaust valve is fitted with a spring ring G. The exhaust valve has a slightly greater lift than the inlet valve. Cylinders; vaporizing heavy oils ; starting.-For using heavy oils, the inlet passage H, formed in one with the main cylinder core, may be adjacent to the exhaust pocket, as shown in Fig. II. As the charge is deflected upwards, any particles of oil present impinge against the heated wall M and are vaporized, while the temperature of the charge is but slightly affected. The engine may be started on petrol, and run on petroleum or paraffin with an ordinary carburettor.
