Door-closing apparatus; door checks; door holders. -A door spring and check for screen and storm or other doors consists of a pivoted check cylinder 14, Fig. 1, a connecting-rod 16 pivoted to the door, and an intermediate lever 15 with a short arm 49 extending beyond the pivot pin 48 by means of which the spring 20 is compressed as the door opens. The lever 15 is pivoted at 35 to the piston-rod 18, the arm 37 pivoted at 38 to the connecting-rod 16 normally lying parallel with the door or lintel. The spring 20 encloses a rod 21 one end of which engages the extension of the lever 15 while the other end is adapted to slide in a lug 53. The other end of the slide 54, Figs. 1 and 3, has a lug 55 with which engages the end of an adjusting-screw 56 of the bracket 22. The slide 54 has bevelled flanges 61 dovetailing with similar flanges of the bracket 22, which has a notch 364 by means of which the parts may be disengaged. The check cylinder 14 has a cap 24 at one end and which is held in place by a spring piece 27, as shown in Fig. 5. The cap 23 secured over the other end of the cylinder is hinged to the bracket 22 and is provided with a U -shaped spring arm 31 which carries a screw 32 to control the opening of the air vent. The fixed end of the connecting-rod is formed with a slotted piece 43, which is adjustably secured to a bracket 41 attached to the door by a screw 45 provided with a square head 46. By this arrangement of parts, the spring is able to exercise its greatest force as the door closes, while it is inoperative when the door is open, the extension of the arm 15 being in the latter case approximately in line with the spring. When it is desired to apply the arrangement to the other side of the door, the bracket 22 is attached to the door, and the end of the connecting-rod to a bracket 70 secured to the door jamb.
