Abstract
23,232. Leechman, G. D. 'Nov. 11. Variable-speed gearing, applicable to velocipedes &c., of the type in which two separate epicyclic trains are employed, one gearing up and the other down. Between the driving-part A and the driven part or hub A<1> there is a loose ring D, which carries the internally-toothed rings of both trains. The part A carries spindles E for planet-pinions E<1> in mesh with a sun-wheel E'. The part A' carries spindles F for planet-wheels F<1> in mesh with a sun-pinion F'. The wheel E' is provided with radial slots E<3> with which a key H sliding in slots B' is adapted to engage when the wheel E<2> is to be held against rotation, and with a circular recess E<4> that does not engage the key H. The wheel F' is adapted to be held stationary by a free-wheel clutch J or to be locked to a sleeve K which slides in grooves A<3> in the part A'. The sleeve K carries teeth K<1>, K<2> which can engage teeth F<3> on the boss of the pinion F<2>, parts of the sleeve projecting between the planet-wheels F<1>. The sleeve K is operated by a key M projecting through slots B<2> and carried by a rod L which also carries the key H. In the position shown, the part A drives the ring D directly through ratchet pawls G, the pinion F<2> is held by the clutch J, and the part A' is driven at the lowest speed. For the second speed, the solid drive, the rod L is moved one step to the left and the key H enters the recess E<4>, the teeth K<1> engaging the teeth F<3>. Further movement of the rod L causes the key H to enter the recesses E<3> and liberates the teeth F<3> so that both trains become operative. The high speed is obtained when the teeth K<2> engage the teeth F<3> and the train E<2>, E', D is alone in operation. A modification is described in which the ring D is supported by a flange resting on the boss of the wheel E<2> and in which one of the ball bearings C<1> is dispensed with. The gearing may also be arranged for two or three speeds.
