Abstract

21,125. Boult, A. J., [Bond, L. A.]. Oct. 18. Waterproofing ropes &c. - Waterproof ropes, cables, &c. are made from hemp, jute, or like strands which have been saturated with molten asphalt of a high degree of purity. The asphalt employed is the residuum from crude petroleum having an asphalt base, such as that from California and Texas. The process and the apparatus employed are described as applied to fabrics. The fabric A is passed by guide-rollers b, e, f through a saturating-tank c, supplied with asphalt from a melting-tank d, kept at a temperature of about 400‹ F. The tank c may be provided with means for keeping it well above the melting-point of the asphalt, which is about 350‹ F. The fabric passes out between heated squeezing-rollers g, which may be adjusted to remove more or less of the surplus asphalt, and may then pass over rollers and across a drying space for a time sufficient to dry and harden the asphalt. To improve the rough surface, the fabric is passed over rollers h, i, k as shown, and is supplied with a surface drier, such as pulverized soapstone or a suitable silicious material, on opposite sides by pipes m, n from a box l. The fabric then passes over a roller p to a set of polishing-rollers, of which the larger r, t rotate at the rate of travel of the web, while the smaller s, v are run faster in order to polish the opposite surfaces. Coloured drying-powders may be employed.
