Abstract

Pistons; stuffing-boxes.-The piston of a small portable blower or exhauster consists of one or more dished spring plates 2, bent to form flanges 3, and provided with packing 4 of felt &c.,which is secured by wires passing round annular grooves 5. Spring hoops 9 may be inserted behind the packing. When two dished plates are employed, the piston is attached to a hollow piston-rod by means of a shoulder 11, spacing-tube 12, and nut 14. Packing for a cylinder gland is made of plumbago and soap.
