Abstract

29,533. Sanders, G. W. May 3, [date appliedfor under Patents Act, A.D. 1901]. Rope railways and tramways; rope grips.-Relates to a cable traction system and to means on the cars by which they can be propelled in either direction along the track. Fig. 1 shows a side elevation of a portion of the track with a car operating thereon, and Fig. 3 a plan view of the same, including the driving-pulley for the cable. The endless propelling-cable 14 runs on sheaves 18 placed along either side of the ordinary track, passing round an idle pulley at one end of the track and round the driving-pulley 12 at the other end. The cars 20 are provided with pulleys 23, 24 around which the cable 14 passes, the pulleys 23 serving as traction wheels, while the pulleys 24 run freely and act as cable guides. To propel the car, one or the other, according to the direction in which it is required to travel, of the traction pulleys 23 is prevented from rotating by tightening the corresponding band brake 25. The band brakes are operated by either of the hand-levers 29, 31, the operator standing upon the platform 21 provided at either end of the car, and they are so arranged that when one is put into action the other is released and vice versÔ. It is stated that this system subjects the cable to but slight wear.
