Abstract

23,900. Bogaerts, H. Nov. 4. Lithographic printing; printing on pictures.- Relates to a process for reproducing pictures whereby all the features of the original such as brush marks, impasto, glazing, and the like are preserved. Ordinary artists' canvas is coated with a suitable colour prepared with wax, and is dried and passed through a glazing-machine, or muslin, stiffened with glue, polished, and coated with a solution of celluloid and a suitable white colour, may be used. After drying, a second coating of the solution is applied and the surface is polished. The drawing is made upon a lithographic stone or typographic block in as many colours as are necessary, oily chalk being used so as to give the least amount of grain. The design is then printed on the prepared surface. To obtain a reproduction of the brush marks, impasto, &c., a matrix is prepared by applying a thin sheet of lead or the like to the picture, the lead being backed with a sheet of blotting-paper or the like. A negative is then produced by means of an ordinary stereotype brush and from it a positive in plaster is made, from which a stout lead or stereo-metal negative is cast. This negative is greased and placed on the copy of the picture, and the two are then subjected to pressure in a heated press. The wax coating on the canvas is thereby softened and forced into the recesses in the matrix. The Provisional Specification states also that the relief may be prepared by transferring the contours of the original on to a canvas by means of a suitable paste, such as a mixture of china clay and glue, and, by the aid of hard and soft brushes, imitating thereon all the brush marks, impasto, and the like.
