Cigarette mouthpieces; cigars.-The object is to form mouthpieces from paper or other similar material, and to attach them to the ends of cigarettes or cigars with a part of the mouthpiece surrounding the end. The cigarettes or cigars are fed into a shoot 65, Fig. 3, from a hopper rocked by a lever 81 actuated by projections on a ring 83. The rod 72 forces the lowest cigarette through an opening 69 into a trough 70, and the rod 73 pushes it into one of the chambers 5 in the cylinder 4, which is mounted on a rotating shaft. The shaft is actuated by a roller 60, Fig. 8, mounted on a disc 58 and engaging the ribs 56 on a wheel 55 fixed to the shaft. The ribs 61, 62 spanning the rollers 57 act as guides to the entering of the roller 60 between the ribs. As each chamber 5, carrying a cigarette, comes opposite the plate 7, a slotted spindle 14 enters it, and a strip of paper 114, Fig. 4, is advanced by a sliding finger or pawl 31 into it, to be twisted by the slotted spindle around the end of the cigarette. The hole in the plate 7 is slightly less than the chambers 5, so that the mouthpiece is stripped from the spindle 14 when it is withdrawn. The strip of paper is of the form shown in Fig. 16. The pawl 31 holds the paper by the hole 121, the pad 46, Fig. 4, supplied with adhesive by the roller 51 mounted on the arm 50, applies it in the form shown at 122, and the end 118 abutting against the end of the cigarette prevents the tobacco from entering the mouth of the smoker. The paper is cut along the line 123 by shears 40, Fig. 4. As the cylinder 4 brings the cigarettes into line with the rod 76, Fig. 3, they are pushed down the shoot 88. The shaft 10 is feathered in a sleeve 16 which receives its rotary motion from a segmental rack-lever 25. The parts described receive their motion from levers and links actuated by cams on the main shaft. Mouthpieces may be made separately by using the machine without introducing cigarettes or cigars.
