Cutting-machines for paper.-The stamp C, Fig. 1, works in vertical guides D on the machine frame, and is brought down gently, at a gradually increasing and then a gradually decreasing speed, to hold the pile of paper placed on the table B, by means of an eccentric H on the main shaft G, from which the knife stock m is operated as usual. The eccentric H oscillates a bell-crank lever R, Q, freely mounted on a shaft P, by means of a friction device consisting of a split ring of fibrous material placed on the extended boss of the bell-crank lever and embraced by a metal ring which is oscillated by the eccentric-rod. The arm Q acts on a projection c to turn a toothed quadrant S gearing with a pinion T fixed on a shaft carrying another pinion, and these pinions engage racks F dependent from the ends of the clamp C. The friction device acts positively to lower the clamp on to the work and then slips round the boss of the bell crank, and an adjustable stop V is arranged to return the parts to their initial relative position on the return stroke of the eccentric. The clamp may be raised by any suitable means, e.g., by springs I<1>, Fig. 1<a> arranged in slotted pockets B' formed in the side frames. The springs act on projections F<1> on the clamp C, and are adjusted by screwed rods secured by nuts and fitted with hand-wheels. The rack-bars D<1> work in the slots C<1> of the pockets. Vertical rods i, also shown in Fig. 9, are carried by bell-crank levers which may be moved to carry the rods over the clamp and thus limit its upward movement when low piles of paper are to be cut. The bellcrank levers are pivoted to the top d of the frame and are linked together, and an operating handle f is fixed on one of the pivots. The rods i may terminate in screwed sockets, by means of which their length may be regulated.
