Abstract

16,746. May, C. July 30. Water and other liquid levels, indicating.-The Figure shows the application to a ballast tank a and bilge d of a ship. A number of insulated wires a<1>, a<2>, a<3>, a<4> dip into the tank a to different depths. The other ends of the wires are arranged on a switchboard e so that any one of the wires can be put into the secondary circuit of a coil k, one end of which is earthed through a telephone l. To ascertain the depth, the primary circuit of the coil is completed by tapping the key n, and the switch-arm f is moved across the contacts e<4>, e<3>, &c., in order, until the telephone speaks. This occurs when the wire in circuit is one which dips into the liquid and thus completes the telephone circuit.
