Abstract

13,969. MacLellan, P. & W., and Dougall, J. June 23. Ropes, ascending and descending, apparatus for; climbing, special appliances for aiding.-Relates to an appliance for enabling workmen and others to ascend a suspended rope, the appliance also serving as a seat for the user. Fig. 1 shows a plan of the appliance, and Fig. 4 a vertical section. It consists of a platform A, of a size to accommodate one person and paint pots, tools, &c., which is provided with foot straps A<1>, A<2> and an aperture for the passage of the rope H. On the underside of the platform are two brackets or frames, only one of which is seen in Fig. 4, serving as bearings for spindles B<3>, B<4>, on which are mounted clutch blocks C', C<2>, having hollow serrated faces engaging the rope, and weighted at their lower ends to make them tend to close together. The blocks are connected by links D to levers D', which can be raised into engagement with spring catches D<2> so as to disengage the blocks from the rope. A brake consists of a pulley E<3> and a pivoted blocK E, which can be moved by a threaded rod F to jam the rope between the block E and the pulley E<3>. The outer end of the rod F is provided with a handle F', Fig. 1. Rods G<1> support a guideeye G for the rope. In use, the brake is loosened, and the person stands on the platform with his feet under the straps, and his weight causes the blocks C', C' to grip the rope. He then grasps the rope as high as he can reach, and pulls himself and the apparatus up, the blocks C', C<2> automatically releasing the rope during this movement; and this operation is repeated until the desired position is reached. To descend the rope, the brake is applied, the levers D<1> are engaged with the catches D', and the brake is freed to an extent sufficient to allow the apparatus to move downwards.
