Abstract

13,742. Theuret, T. June 19. Nailing.- Boxes, packing-crates, and the like are nailed by apparatus such as that shown in Figs 1, 2, and 6. A frame a has slideways b, on which the table c is adjustably fixed, and on which the hammer d slides, The hammer is actuated by cams m, n, on a shaft j which work on rollers 32,33 on the hammer. The shaft j is geared with the motor shaft e, with which is geared a flywheel o. Connected with the frame a are two supports q, between which a carrier 2 traverses on friction rollers r mounted on the supports. Carried on the supports q are also slide-bars s, mounted on springs, on which a frame enclosing the boards to be nailed is placed against stops 36. The carrier has a transverse bar 4 to which magnet supports, or armatures 5, are attached, the magnets 26, which are of horse-shoe shape, being placed in the several lines according to the position in which the nails are to be driven. The nails are distributed by a roller 8 provided with pins, which is rotated above an inclined plate 6 having transverse slits, narrower than the heads of the nails, along which the nails fall. Each slit or groove has at its lower end a vertical tube 10, down which the nails fall when released by arms 21, each arm ending in a double nose. The arms, which are mounted on vertical, spring rods 19, are actuated to release the nails by spring pins 28, which are located near the magnets and carried in sockets in the magnet supports, the pins engaging with noses at the bases of the rods 19. The pins also withdraw plates 14 by which sockets or nozzles at the bases of the tubes 10 into which the nails fall are closed. The plates 14 being withdrawn, the nails are attracted and held by the magnets. The carrier 2 has a rack on its underside so as to be traversed by a pinion u which, through change-wheels Z, 1 carried on an arm y, a pinion v, and chain gearing, is actuated from the motor shaft. The arm y is automatically actuated through links 34, 35 by cams l on the shaft j to change the wheels Z, 1, or to disengage them from the pinion u, to give a backward or a forward movement to the carrier, or to cause it to stop. While the bevelled rear edge of the crossbar 4 passes over and depresses the frame enclosing the work, on its backward movement, the front edge of the cross-bar engages with the frame and carries it to the table c in its forward movement. The nails, which have been taken up by the magnets, are partially inserted into the boards by the hammer d, when the carrier is at rest under it, the hammer, when the carrier and magnets are withdrawn, again descending to drive the nails home. The boards may be afterwards rolled to drive the nails further, and turn down the points.
