Abstract
12,849. Besson & Co., and Edwards, T. C. June 8. Brass and like wind instruments.-Instruments such as the euphonium are provided with an ordinary and an alternative half-tone loop tube, and both an ordinary and an alternative two half-tones loop tube, and three pistons B, C, D, which are, respectively, provided with ports b, c, d, adapted to coincide with one another and with the main tube a, g, when all the pistons are in the normal position. The third piston B has ports b, m, f, n therein, the second piston C has ports c, i, j, o, p, and the first piston D ports d, k, l, r, s, the pistons and ports being constructed and arranged to act in combination with one another, and with the main tubing, and the various loop tubes. The third piston, when depressed, closes all such portions of the normal tube as are contained between their normal entrance to and exit from the third piston, together with the ordinary loop tubes, and substitutes therefor another tubing of exact length to lower the pitch three half-tones. Means are provided to connect up the alternative half-tone and two half-tone loop tubes to further and correctly lower the pitch by one or two semitones. The loop tubes Y, Z are the alternative half-tone and two half-tones tubes respectively, while the loop tubes G, H are the ordinary two and three half-tones loop tubes respectively. The ordinary half-tone loop tube is associated with the second piston, and a short tube connects the second and first pistons C, D. Tuning-slides are provided in the tubes and loops where required. The invention is applicable to any number of valves, and the valves may be rotary pistons, or lever valves. The upper and lower loop tubings may be interchanged, if desired.
