Abstract

5875. Jackson, J. March 13. Spring wheels.-Relates to spring wheels for railway, tramway, and road vehicles, and cycles. In one arrangement, shown in Fig. 1, the wheel spokes are connected to a r i n g b between which and an inner ring a are arranged a number of helical or other springs c. The springs are mounted on radial bolts d, which pass through holes in the inner ring and have heads shaped to fit the outer ring. When building the wheel, an initial compression is applied to the spring by means of nuts on the bolts. Relative rotation of the rings a, b is prevented by links o pivoted to the ring a and connected to the outer ring by slots p and studs q on lugs r. The ring a is clamped between a collar i, Fig. 9, formed on the hub, and a loose collar k, by bolts m passing through the ring a. Shoulders on the collars fit inside the ring a. The space between the collars serves to hold lubricant. Discs n cover the space occupied by the springs. In a modification shown in Fig. 10, the springs c are arranged between an inner wheel t and an outer rim s, and the bolts d pass through sockets v, which are secured in the rim of the inner wheel by lubricating-caps w. Relative rotation of the two parts of the spring wheel may also be prevented by a polygonal collar on the hub loosely engaging a similar hole in a disc fixed to the wheels
