Abstract

18,513. Ruppert, O. Sept. 16. Coking.-Coal is distilled in thick layers so as to produce good dense coke, the rich gas is collected separately for illuminating purposes, and the poor gas is mixed with producer gas and air, if required, and burned to heat the retorts, the products of combust i o n being employed to heat the air supply. Fig. 1 shows four vertical longitudinal s e c - tions of the appa. ratus, and Fig. 3 a vertical cross sec. tion through a retort and pro ducer. The gases from the producer 14 pass througl openings 15 into a passage 13, whicl also receives heated air through t h i pipes 16, and poo: gas from the re torts 1. The products of combustion pass up a series of passages arranged betwaen each pair of retorts, whereby the latter are heated, to the chamber 7<1>. The retorts are charged with coal either through hoppers 2 or through openings 26 in the ends 24, 25. The illuminating gases first given off pass away through the pipes 3 to the condenser 4, for purification and use. When the gases evolved become less rich in illuminants, the outlets through the pipes 3 are closed, and slides 6 are removed to allow the gases to pass to an upper distributing space, from which they pass downwards through a set of passages arranged between the retorts to the passage 13. The products of combustion pass from the chamber 7<1> into lateral discharging passages 17, and thence through bottom passages 18 and the passages 19 for heating the air pipes 16. The retorts are formed by the walls of the heating passages. The hollow bricks forming these passages are sufficiently tall that the retorts are only one brick high, and the bricks are set as close together as possible so as to avoid joints in the external walls.
