Abstract

13,247. Vespermann, O. July 23. Signals, flag.-Relates to military signalling flags or fanions. The staff consists of a case or tube a, having an inner sliding tube b, which is projected by the spring c when the bayonet-joint catch d is released. The catch is also adapted to lock the tube b in its outer position, as shown in dotted lines. The flag e is mounted on the spindle f in the tube b, and is withdrawn through a slit, which is normally covered by a metal strip g on the free end of the flag. The flag is withdrawn against the action of the spring h, and its spindle is locked by the pawl and ratchet k, i, the spring serving to retract the flag within the tube b when the pawl is released. On taking off the cap l, the flag can be entirely removed, to permit the cleaning of the tube b &c. The flag, when furled, can be suspended from the sword belt or loop by the hook m, and may be buckled to the side-arm &c. by the strap n.
