Abstract

8512. Rudolph, P. April 12. Lenses.-The object is to produce a flat image, equally free from aberration at all points, but distorted in a definite ratio with respect to its two principal axes at right-angles to each other. This result is impossible with arrangements of lenses of double curvature, as either the image is similar to the object or the distorted parts are subject to proportionate aberration. It is, however, attainable by a system of refracting surfaces having two, and only two, points on the axis from which, when pencils of rays emanate, they can be brought again to a focus. In practice the system takes the form of a pair, or pairs, of cylindrical lenses, with their axes at right angles, combined, if desired, with spherical lenses ; or of spherical lenses with prisms, preferably of the type known as "Brewster's straight sight set of prisms." Fig. 2 shows a system in which the square disc A is magnified on two sections at right-angles into a rectangle having length and breadth B, B'. The spherical lens X is combined with double cylindrical lenses L<1> L<3> , L<2> L<4>, to allow for correction for achromatism &c.
