Abstract

7587. Nef, J. J. March 29. Brakes.-Air-compressing apparatus. Fig. 1 shows a general view, and Fig. 5 an enlarged section through the governor. A is the reservoir, B the service valve, C the governor, D the air pump, and E the brake cylinder. Normally the air pressure in the reservoir A passes by the pipe L to the cylinder y, and thence by the port x to the cylinder j, and by the port u to the cylinder v, which is larger than the cylinder y. In this condition the pistons r, s stand to the left, while the piston m also stands to the left against the action of the spring o. When the pressure in the reservoir falls, the piston m is carried to the right hand and moves the slide valve p so as to cut off the air supply to the cylinder v and to open it to exhaust, the effect being to cause the pistons r, s to move to the right, thus carrying the pivoted lever P also to the right, and bringing the clutch R into action with the gear-wheels from the axle and starting the air pump D. The cylinder m, m is connected by the pipe i, i to the service valve B, so that, when the brakes are released, the exhaust air passes down the pipe i, i to the cylinder m, m and thus starts the air pump. A chamber z contains a supply of air which is directed to the valves K of the air pump by the slide valve p at the first movement of such slide valve, the purpose being to prevent the valves of the air pump from acting during the coupling and starting operation of the air pump.
