Abstract

20,215. Redfern, G. F., [Saunders, E. C.]. Sept. 2. Wicks.-A partially-incandescent light is obtained, and the wick is rendered incombustible, by treatment with a solution obtained from monazite sand. This sand, which contains rare earths, is raised to a black heat in a furnace, ground to a fine powder, soaked in water for ten or twelve days, and then drained and partially evaporated. After the wicks have been soaked or otherwise well saturated in the solution thus obtained, and dried, they are ready for use.
