Abstract

189,526. Strauss, J. B. Aug. 30, 1921. Energy-absorbing elements.- A road barrier for gradually stopping vehicles comprises an impact-receiving part 3 connected to primary and secondary retarding-mechanisms acting in succession. The part 3, consisting of flexible cables, &c., is connected to chains 5 which pass through spacers 4 guided on the supports 1. Each spacer is connected by a chain 13 to the driving-wheel 15 of a motor 17 located at 18 in the base of the support, so as to raise or lower the barrier. The chains 5 pass over pulleys 6 on the support and pulleys 7 on a weight 8 constituting the primary means for stopping the vehicle. The weight 8 in its travel engages the secondary friction device 11 which may produce a clamping effect increasing with the travel of the weight.
