Abstract

188,669. Wellman Seaver Morgan Co., (Assignees of Rogers, J. F.). Nov. 12, 1921, [Convention date]. Grates; asla-pits.-In order to effect the breaking up and removal of clinker and ashes at the lower part of a gas producer, the producer shell 10, Fig. 1, upon the lower part of which is supported a blast delivery spider, and the ash-pan 18, which supports a central blast hood 28, are adapted to be rotated together or independently about a common axis. Preferably, the producer shell is rotated and the ash-pan is carried round with it and means are provided for stopping the rotation of the ash-pan at intervals. The base of the producer shell is provided with skirts 19, 26 dipping into water in the ash-pan which is supported on ball-bearings 20 arranged between the support 21 and hollow hub 23 through which blast is supplied by a pipe 25. The hub 23 carries a spider 30 in which is supported a vertical shaft 29 carrying the blast hood 29, pyramidal in shape, beneath which blast is supplied through openings 27 in the hub of the blast delivery spider. The latter comprises hollow arms 25<a> supported by the shell 10 and provided with delivery openings 25<c>. The spider arm may be provided with lateral extensions 25<e>, 25<g>, as shown in Figs. 11 and 13, the under surfaces of the extensions being provided with teeth between which are apertures for the delivery of the blast. The under surfaces of the arms are preferably inclined, as shown in Fig. 15, so as to have a downward wedging action on the ashes &c. as the arms rotate relatively to the ashes. The blast spider may be further modified by connecting the arms to an annular blast ring carried by the producer shell. Rotation of the shell 10 is effected by a bevel pinion 40 driven through worm gearing from a motor and engaging with an annular rack 41 formed on the flange 13 which rests on rollers 11 supported on columns such as 12. The rotation of the shell and the ashes in the lower part of the producer causes the ash-pan and the hood 28 to rotate with them, but in order to effect the shearing of the ashes and clinker the rotation of the ash-pan is stopped at intervals by a pawl 62, Fig. 10, pivoted on a bracket 61 and adapted to engage at intervals stops 63 secured to a ring 64 on the ash-pan. The pawl 62 is actuated by a rod 58 engaging with the pawl arm 59 and actuated by a cam 53, Fig. 1, mounted on a shaft 48 and engaging with the lever 55, 57 which is connected to the rod 58. The cam 53 is driven by pawl-and-ratchet gearing 46, 47 from the same motor which drives the producer shell. The number and spacing of the stops 63 on the ashpan may be varied to vary the duration of the stoppage of the ash-pan. The motor which drives the producer also serves to actuate the fuelfeeding apparatus and the poker.
