In an apparatus for cooking oil-seed and expressing the oil therefrom a charge of seed is cut off from the discharge shoot of the cooker by an horizontally reciprocating plate forming the upper side of a mould, the lower side of which is formed by a second plate which delivers the moulded cake to the press, whence it is ejected after pressing. The seed, after being crushed by rolls 3, is transported by a conveyer 4 and an elevator 5 to the cooker 6, which consists of a jacketed vessel containing a conveyer. The vessel 6 may be heated by steam or by combustion gases. In the latter case a chimney 13 is provided surrounded by a chamber 14, in which water is heated for conditioning the seed. From the vessel 6 the seed issues by a shoot 15 surrounded by a sleeve 9 reciprocated vertically by link-work, Fig. 5, and provided with an horizentally-reciprocating plate 16, which cuts off a charge of seed and moulds it against a plate 17, which then moves to carry the moulded cake to the press 19. It is there held in position by a pivoted catch 18, while the plate 17 returns. The cake is then compressed and removed by a leveroperated ejecting device. The plates 16, 17, catch 18 and the operating-valves of the press 20 are all operated by cams on a shaft 2. Paring blades and means for crushing the parings and returning them to the cooker are also provided.
