Abstract
176,789. Beck, F. C. March 11, 1921, [Convention date]. Pumps, syringes, and like appliances.-In a vaginal irrigator of the type comprising a closed liquid reservoir, a pumping device, and a vaginal obturator traversed by inflow and outflow passages, the outflow passage is connected to the reservoir so that a closed circulatory system is set up and outflow of the injected liquid from the vagina is accelerated. In an elementary form shown in Fig. 1 a closed reservoir 1 is connected to a pipe 3a and enema syringe 2 having valves 2<a>, 2b and to a returnflow pipe 5. The syringe 2 and pipe 5 are both in communication with a nozzle pipe 3<c> which traverses the obturator 4. The valve 2<b> normallv closes the syringe 2 but when open is so arranged as to close the outflow pipe 5. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the closed, reservoir comprises a liquid container 1<a> and a receiving vessel 1<b> separated by a partition 1<c> and held together by clamps. A pipe 1<d> connects the receiver 1<b> with the upper part of the reservoir 1<a>. A suction pipe 7 connected to the syringe 2 and an overflow pipe 8 connected to the return pipe 5 are arranged in the positions shown. An air inlet valve controlled from outside the apparatus may be arranged at the top of the pipe 7 so that, after irrigation, air may be pumped to the vagina to expel any remaining liquid. Fig. 3 shows a modification in which an inverted vacuum flask 1 or any other bottle serves as the closed reservoir and is connected to the pump 2 by a liquid supply tube 3a and by an air pipe 14 either of which may be put into communication with the pump by manipulation of a valve comprising a tubular plunger 3<b> operated by a rotary member 11. A return flow tube 5 passing through the tube 3<a> to the top of the inverted flask is also provided. In this form the connection between the reservoir 1 and the vaginal obturator 4 is rigid and the valve 3b is arranged in a position above the obturator 4. In further modifications the pump 2 may be arranged in the return flow pipe instead of the inflow pipe or may be replaced by any other liquid forcing means. In a modification of the form shown in Fig. 3 the transition from water pumping to air pumping may be effected by a device for connecting the orifice of the inflow pipe with the outflow pipe and vice versa.
